Description

Air gap monitoring is essential for ensuring the optimal operation and longevity of large, low-speed hydro generators, motors, and other rotating machinery. It involves real-time measurement of the distance between rotor poles and the stator, which helps maintain machine balance and efficiency, preventing mechanical issues and improving performance.

In large, low-speed hydro generators, the air gap between rotor and stator is extremely small relative to the stator bore diameter, which makes it virtually impossible to achieve perfect centering during assembly. As a result, machines often operate with a slight but significant misalignment caused by their large rotating mass. Left unmonitored, this can lead to unbalanced magnetic pull, increased vibration, and additional electrical losses. Continuous air gap monitoring allows operators to track minimum and maximum gap values, assess stator and rotor shape, monitor the magnetic flux of each pole, and follow long-term trends — ensuring safe operation and helping prevent serious mechanical or electrical damage before it occurs.
